Once the sun sets, an entirely new world of photographic imagery opens up – bringing with it its own set of incredible nightpanoramas… and unique challenges.
Night time presents a myriad of interesting new elements and aspects to play with for the photographer, with light sources, shadows, natural glows the moon all factoring in for completely changing what may be a mundane shot during the day. What is bland under the sun may turn completely fascinating by night, whether it’s a city, natural landscape, or something else entirely.
Nighttime photography can also be exceptionally frustrating, with longer exposure and unique settings all a requirement. In this category, we look at the shots taken that best sum up Australia at night.
To submit your photo entry for the Night category, please ensure it adheres to the following criteria:
- Must be within Australia – no overseas experiences will be accepted for submission.
- Must be taken at ‘true’ night – while there is no definitive “borderline” for time of day that qualifies as “night” given difference in climates and timezones throughout the country, the sun needs to have obviously already set for the shots submitted here.
- Must be taken with DSLR, Action Cam or similar – mobile phone photos will not be accepted. EXIF data will be required for shortlisted contestants.
- May include flash/flashless shots – both subjects captured at night via flash and without will be accepted.
You will be judged on your ability to encapsulate the different perspectives night time offers, along with creative capture of colour, lighting, shadow and other key elements.
